Holly Riglar wonders about the connection between tea… and lesbianism.
I was re-watching series two of Lip Service when, during a steamy kiss scene between Cat and Frankie, Frankie uttered a line about Tess ‘going all lesbian’ on her after having bought a large collection of herbal teas. Being quite partial to the hot beverage myself, it was enough to make me sit up and pause the show. And, having nothing better to do whilst uni is out, I decided to give the thesis of herbal tea drinking lesbians some serious consideration. I think tea deserves some serious consideration, don’t you?
Now I love tea. I really, really love tea – and I always thought it was the Briton in me. I even have a poster on my wall that reads, ‘Keep Calm and Drink Tea’. Perhaps it’s hereditary; my mum’s the same. However, I’m also a lesbian. Is there a connection?
I decided to check out my own lesbian levels according to my tea collection. I knew I had a couple of different kinds in my cupboard and I decided to see exactly how I rated on the ‘how much do you love tea?’ scale.
In all, I counted eight flavours of tea in my posession, not including the normal kind. In no particular order they were Cranberry, Apple and Pear, Pineapple and Grapefruit, Mango and Lychee, Orange and Lotus Flower, Peppermint, Liquorice and Camomile. (Are some kinds more lesbian than others? Tess had Hibiscus and Goji Berry, I didn’t. What did that say about me?)
Before hearing the comment about lesbians and herbal tea, I believed mine to be a normal selection, but now I’m beginning to wonder if it isn’t a bit excessive. And if that isn’t Sapphic enough, I even have a nice, rainbow mug that I generally choose to drink my tea from.
To take my research a step further, I decided to take my tea query to the internet. Sadly my Google search didn’t prove to be very successful; it only returned a questionable Urban Dictionary account of lesbian tea and a couple of fan videos revolving around some character from Skins who’s apparently a lesbian.
So, I call upon my Climax Online readers. Is the connection between great herbal tea collections and lesbianism an actual thing or do I just have a strange, but benign, tea fetish? And, if the former’s the case, should I be worried about my mum..?
