With ten days to go until the Eurovision Song Contest, and with Vienna celebrating the theme of diversity and unity set by last year’s winner Conchita Wurst, we are kicking off the Eurovision coverage with a journey through time. Could these be the biggest Eurovision gay anthems of all time?
DANA INTERNATIONAL – DIVA
Dana International won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998 with this massive anthem about peace and openness and let’s not lie, it’s as epic on any dancefloor today as it was then.
CELINE DION – NE PARTEZ PAS SANS MOI
From a diva in 1998 to a diva in 1988, this is a classic in any Eurovision lover’s collection. Only one remark here: the outfit… dear Celine, what were you thinking?
MARIJA ŠEROFOVIC – MOLVITA
Could she be the most lesbian winner of all time? The song is timeless, as is that dapper suit. Marija and her wall of hand-holding babes remain forever in our hearts.
t.A.T.u. – NE VER BE BOYSIA NEW PROSI
Fine, so they just faked their lesbianism but we forgive them and their non-glamorous get-up. t.A.T.u. have place in every 90s teenage lesbian’s heart and we will always love them for bringing normcore to the masses.
SCOOCH – FLYING THE FLAG
In what could be the campest entry to date, United Kingdom sent Scooch, their sassy flight attendants and sexual innuendoes to Eurovision in 2007. Unfortunately they didn’t do too well and it was all a bit of a crash landing… Salted nuts, sir?
ROBIN STJERNBERG – YOU
Openly gay Robin Stjernberg represented Sweden in Eurovision Song Contest 2013 and what a little cutie he was!
KRISTA SIEGFRIDS – MARRY ME
Ok so it wasn’t a very gay entry considering Krista was proposing to her boyfriend but the performance did feature a lesbian kiss that outraged Turkey to much that they pulled out of televising the competition. Scandal!
VERKA SERDUCHKA – DANCING LASHA TUMBAI
Verka Serduchka served up some serious silver space realeness in 2007 with this absolute Eurovision classic. Oh, they don’t make ‘em like this anymore.
LOREEN – EUPHORIA
Let’s face it, bisexual goddess of Sweden, Loreen, created the anthem of a century when she won with Euphoria in 2012. The gay clubs haven’t stopped playing it since – because it never gets old. Everybody now; Euphoria!!!!
CONCHITA WURST – RISE LIKE A PHOENIX
Last but not least, our favourite bearded lady Conchita Wurst took our breath away in 2014 with Bond theme-esque Rise Like A Phoenix, putting diversity and LGBT rights firmly on the agenda for Eurovision Song Contests to come. We bow down!
